Hammocks are the perfect solution to protect you from crawling insects or mosquitoes in nature – especially when you hang them between two trees. However, outdoor hammocks with mosquito nets are more versatile than you might think. What do you do when there are no suitable trees around? With this survival hack, you can use your ultralight hammock with a mosquito net as a ground tent.
Outdoor hammocks aren’t just for hanging in the air. During a wild camping night under the open sky, hammocks with mosquito nets can also be used as a sleeping spot and insect protection on the ground. Here’s how the survival hack works:
Setting up a hammock without trees
  1. Lay out the hammock : Spread your outdoor hammock flat on the ground. Make sure there are no sharp stones or branches underneath and that you’re not lying on a slope. 2. Secure the hammock: Insert two sticks into the end loops of the hammock to keep it stable. You can use trekking poles or longer branches. If you sharpen the ends of the branches with a pocketknife, they will hold better. 3. Set up the mosquito net: Use the ridgeline (a cord running inside the mosquito net) to stretch the mosquito net like a tent over the hammock. Attach the ridgeline to the top ends of the trekking poles or branches.
And there you have it – a DIY bivy sack made from a mosquito net!
Does a hammock provide sleep comfort and safety on the ground?
Hammocks also offer protection and comfort on the ground. You can sleep comfortably and safely in outdoor hammocks – here are some hammock hacks:
  • Sleep softly: Place a sleeping pad, leaves, or moss under the hammock to cushion your sleeping spot. • Protection from moisture and crawling insects : Position logs under your hammock to create distance from the ground. This keeps you dry and safe from uninvited guests like ants or beetles. • Hammocks with mosquito nets provide a sense of security by creating a protective space – ideal for not feeling completely exposed on the ground.

Advantages of Amazonas Ultra-Light Hammocks on the ground

Outdoor hammocks like the Amazonas Ultra-Light Mosquito Net Hammocks are not only lightweight and compact but also extremely practical for the so-called ground setup:
• Amazonas hammocks have 4 small loops on the sides (normally used for attaching an underquilt), which can also be used to secure the hammock to the ground.
• Amazonas Thermo Hammocks feature an i ntegrated thermo pocket – perfect for inserting a sleeping pad or soft leaves. This prevents anything from slipping, even if you move around at night.
• The ridgeline comes pre-installed – no time-consuming threading required! Plus, there are spreader bars for flexible adjustment of the mosquito net – so it doesn’t hang too low in your face.
• The integrated mosquito net has particularly fine mes h and reliably protects you from mosquitoes – essential for survival trips in the tropics or even outdoor overnight stays in Europe.

Conclusion: Hammock – your versatile Companion
Hammocks are the ideal choice for any adventure. Outdoor hammocks like the Amazonas Ultra-Light are lightweight, durable, and offer protection and comfort – whether you use them between trees or on the ground.
Are you ready for your next adventure? With an ultralight hammock and mosquito net, you’re always well-prepared!

With the right technology and the right equipment, you can set up your ultralight hammock safely even without trees. Read here about the advantages of our Madera tree replacement stand.
Outdoor hammock - alternative hanging points

To use your Amazonas hammock comfortably, you need two fixed points. These don’t necessarily have to be trees – the following alternatives are available:
• Balcony railings or sturdy posts • Vehicles (e.g. roof racks) as a mounting option • Rocks or large stones with sufficient clearance
Please pay attention to the stability of your hanging points so that you can hang out relaxed! Here you can read how to hang a hammock safely !
Hang an outdoor hammock with just one tree
If you can only find one suitable tree, you can create a second hanging point with our AMAZONAS Madera hammock stand. This folding tree replacement frame is made of wood, can be put together without screws and is anchored in the ground with a peg.
Advantages of the MADERA hammock stand:

• Flexibility – The Madera frame offers you a tree replacement • Compactness – no larger than a parasol when packed • Easy assembly possible without tools • Stable anchoring for a secure hold
Use an outdoor hammock on the ground
You can also use an ultralight hammock with a bug net on the ground as mosquito protection. Here we explain how.
  Conclusion
Hanging an outdoor hammock without trees is no problem if you get creative and use the right tools. With the AMAZONAS Madera hammock frame you have the perfect solution for all situations where a second tree is missing. So get out into nature – and enjoy your ultra-light hammock in every imaginable place!

The Amazonas organizer for ultralight outdoor hammocks with mosquito net allows you to store your outdoor equipment, such as torch, knife or even your mobile phone conveniently and within reach inside your hammock.
Advantages of the Organizer in your hammock
When spending the night in your outdoor hammock, you need to have a few essential items close at hand. If you just put them in the sleeping area of the hammock, they can slip under your body and be hard to find again. This can't happen with the Organzier, because the items are neatly stowed away and within sight above you .
In the past, Amazonas Ultra-Light Outdoor Hammocks were equipped with pockets on the mosquito net. The mosquito net was often pulled too far into the interior by the weight of the items stored in it, which is no longer the case with the organizer attached to the Ridgeline.
Attaching the Organizer to the ridgeline of your hammock:
The Organizer is attached to the ridgeline with 2 clips . You can move it flexibly along the ridgeline. You don't have to thread it through the ridgeline of the mosquito net hammock and can simply put it in your rucksack together with your valuables when packing. A cord with a locking button prevents anything from falling out of the organiser. The organiser is also made of transparent mosquito net fabric, so you can not only see what's inside , but also place a torch vertically inside.
The Organizer is suitable for hammocks with a ridgeline that runs inside the mosquito net. (available from 2023 for most Amazonas Ultra-Light mosquito hammocks).
If you are using a hammock without a mosquito net, you can still attach the Organizer above the hammock using an additional cord that you loop around the trees.
The Organizer is explained here. (included with the Adventure Hero XXL ):

                <![CDATA[
Hammock with tarp or a tent for an overnight stay outdoors? Both sleeping options have their advantages and disadvantages.
Hammock setup - 10 advantages over the tent:
  1. Wild camping with a hammock is not forbidden Wild camping with a hammock or tarp is tolerated in Germany, whereas wild camping, with a few exceptions, is prohibited.
  2. Weight and volume lower with hammock Our ADVENTURE SET made of ultra-light ripstop material weighs only 940g including mosquito hammock, suspension ropes and tarp. When packed, the individual parts have a volume of 3 drink cans. This means you can easily store them in your backpack. A standard tent often weighs more than 1kg and is a little bulkier when stowed in a rucksack.
  3. No condensation under the tarp Unlike a tent (especially a single-layer tent), where condensation can form on the walls from breathing, there's always plenty of air circulation in a hammock.
  4. Sleeping comfort is higher in hammocks You can lie more comfortably in a hammock than on the ground in a tent. If you use the Brazilian lying technique , you can even sleep with your back stretched out and be gently rocked to sleep.
  5. In a hammock you are part of nature and protect it at the same time In a hammock you can enjoy your surroundings more directly. You can not only look at the starry sky, but also immediately see where an unknown noise comes from. Hammocks protect nature. The ground is not used over a wide area as it is with a tent. This means that small creeping animals and plants are spared.
  6. Hammocks offer protection from animals, thanks to the mosquito net and the distance from the ground Crawling animals such as ants and snails cannot harm you in a hammock. In a hammock with a mosquito net you are also safe from mosquitoes. You are even protected from relatively large animals, such as wild bears, if you hang your hammock relatively high. Most hammocks and tarps are made in muted colours or a camouflage pattern. This is less noticeable in the wild than a brightly coloured tent. This can look like a foreign object to animals, which could make them aggressive.
  7. Hammocks are better on damp and uneven ground You can set up a hammock over damp and uneven ground, as well as on slopes where you usually have a great view of the area. You don't necessarily need trees to use a hammock or tarp. You can also set it up on the ground using trekking poles, branches or rocks.
  8. With a tarp you can try different setups A hammock setup offers many different ways to set up your tarp. Close to the ground as a tent substitute, sheltered from the wind or open to enjoy the view or create space for several people.
  9. Rain-protected living space under a tarp When it rains, you can prepare food under a tarp, sit with several people or even build a campfire.
  10. Winter suitability of the tarp, thanks to a slanted setup Most tents are not designed for heavy snowfall. The tent poles could buckle under the weight of the snow. A tarp, on the other hand, can be pitched at an angle so that the snow slides down.
What other equipment you need for an overnight stay in a hammock.

The Ridgeline is the rope that stretches the mosquito net on mosquito hammocks and thus provides more space in the hammock.
Until now, the Ridgeline was supplied separately with most Amazonas Ultra-Light mosquito hammocks and had to be threaded through the suspension loops when setting up the hammock.
Now the ridgeline is moved inside the mosquito net:

To make it easier to set up our mosquito hammocks, we have moved the guy line of the mosquito net on the inside of the net. This way, when hanging the hammock, you only have to attach the ridgeline to the trees.

This change will be available on all our mosquito hammocks by mid 2023 ( Moskito-Traveller Thermo is already supplied with internal ridgeline).
These are the advantages of the internal Ridgeline:
• Setting up the hammock is easier and faster • The Ridgeline does not get lost because it is connected to the product • The Ridgeline can be used to hang light items such as a torch or Organizer . • With the two rope stoppers inside, the net can be optimally stretched and the interior space can be pleasantly enlarged
In the following hammocks, the ridgeline is already inside . It is also attached to the hammock and does not have to be attached to the tree:
   Adventure Hero XXL , Moskito-Traveller Quilted , Moskito-Traveller forest , Moskito-Traveller Thermo , Moskito-Traveller Thermo XXL

The MOSKITO TRAVELLER QUILTED is a combination of a Moskito hammock and an underquilt. This ‘3 in 1’ hammock not only warms you from below and protects you from mosquitoes . It is also very easy to set up. This makes the Moskito Traveller Quilted particularly suitable for hammock camping beginners for whom hanging up the many individual components of hammock equipment would still be a complicated task.

Tips for setting up the Moskito Traveller Quilted hammock:

• The hammock is packed in a so-called bishop’s mitre (sewn-on pack sack), which has a loop at one end. Just hang the rope that goes around the tree* there, pull the hammock out of the pack sack and attach it to the second tree. *not included in the delivery.
Find out here what distance you need between the trees!
• The ridgeline is already pre-assembled and does not need to be specially hung up. This rope for tensioning the mosquito net is no longer attached to the trees, but is fixed to the ends of the hammock. With the help of the so-called Prusik knot (a sliding knot or friction hitch), you can tighten the ridgeline. You hold the knot between your fingers. This allows you to slide it back and forth along the ridgeline. TIP : You should not pull away from the line (otherwise the knot will stall) but along the length of the line.
• Now all you have to do is insert the patented spreader bars into the pockets at the top of the mosquito net . When you are lying in the hammock, you can move them along the ridgeline to stretch the net even more.
• When dismantling , you simply detach one end of the outdoor hammock from the tree and roll up the hammock like a sock to store it again in the bishop’s mitre at the other end. This way, the hammock does not get wet by falling on the ground and you do not need another person to help you take down the hammock.
• This outdoor hammock, made of ultra-light ripstop parachute silk , can also be used without a mosquito net . Simply turn it around and relax!
• If you’re spending the night outdoors, you can also get a tarp for protection from rain or wind . And please don’t forget the tree straps for hanging up the hammock!
• On particularly cold nights or when hammock camping in winter, you can combine the Moskito Traveller Quilted with an underquilt . This way you can increase the degree of warmth by simply attaching the underquilt underneath the hammock.

Outdoor hammocks are hung without a frame, as they are mostly used in the great outdoors. Hammocks are hung low. To hang up a hammock properly, you need two fixed points. The suspension loops of the hammocks should be positioned at about head height and about 3 m apart from each other .

This way the hammock has the optimal tension when you are hanging out in it using the Brazilian lying technique , which is kindest to your back!
If the trees or posts are further apart, you can extend the hammock with additional ropes. The suspension point must then be set correspondingly higher.
Please also note the recommended hanging width that is stated on the product packaging of your hammock or on the product page in the shop. This may vary depending on the hammock model.

                  1. The hammock - so ultralight that you hardly notice it
Unlike a classic hammock, which weighs around 2-3 kg, most of our outdoor hammocks are between 300 g and 900 g light! With its 180 g intrinsic weight, our ADVENTURE HAMMOCK is actually the lightest king-size hammock in the world!
Combined with a tarp and underquilt , a trekking hammock can replace a camp bed, sleeping bag or even a tent when bivouacking. This way you save valuable kilos in your hiking backpack.
  2. The hammock in jacket pocket format – extremely small pack size!

Hardly bigger than a 0.3 litre water bottle, an ultralight hammock fits into any piece of luggage and into any van or camper, no matter how full it is. It can be stowed in a jacket pocket and will almost be lost in your travel bagpack.
  3. Small but mighty! Despite small pack size – robust and extra large
Our Adventure series is made out of 20D ripstop nylon. Hammocks made of this material are not only particularly durable (max. load 150 kg); the ripstop technology also ensures that if there is a small hole in the material, it will not create a ‘runner’ or a tear. In this way it stands up to the most challenging tests!
Especially after a long journey or a strenuous hike, you deserve to stretch out comfortably. That’s why the size of the lying surface also plays an important role in ultralight hammocks. This is because for the right lying technique you need to have enough fabric, especially in terms of width. For this reason, our hammocks are wider than standard .
  4. Parachute silk, breathable and quick-drying
In humid conditions or high temperatures, a cotton hammock can take a long time to dry. An ultra-light travel hammock made of parachute silk, on the other hand, gets dry again very quickly, just because of the thinness of the material and the special breathable fabric.
  5. A hammock for all seasons!
Outdoor hammocks are flexible and can be used in all life situations . Whether in your rucksack on a trip around the world, or in your hiking backpack when trekking, a hammock made of ultralight material is an outdoor helper you can rely on. A space-saver of this minute size takes up hardly any room in the fullest van or camper. Even bushcrafters, who have high demands when it comes to functional outdoor equipment, appreciate the advantages of this compact substitute bed.
Now you just have to find the right one for you among the different versions! Our hammock finder can help you find what you are looking for…

Outdoor hammocks are often used for sleeping in the open air. What you need to do if you want to lie in your hammock as comfortably as in a bed is explained here in the Brazilian lying technique.

AMAZONAS ultralight hammocks are wider than standard . This is important for you to be able to stretch out completely and lie comfortably. When wild camping, many people even spend the whole night in their hammock. So that you can experience the full comfort of lying in your hammock, we explain the Brazilian lying technique for you here. Brazilians still use their hammocks as a substitute for a bed!
Just try it out. The most important thing here is that you do not hang the hammock too tightly, but loosely. See picture below.

You are lying correctly when your body fans out the hammock nicely by lying diagonally and you can relax and watch what is happening above and around you.
It is important that the hanging loops of the hammock are attached at head height and are only about 3 m apart. This allows the hammock to sag in a deep arc. Only this makes it possible that you can lie in it diagonally ( "from corner to corner" ) like a real Brazilian instead of lengthwise. Thus the back remains straight! This is the secret how you can lie comfortably and relaxed in the hammock for hours.
We also have the right fastening material for you.
A further advantage of this reclining technology The side fabric of the hammock is stretched taut and has no chance of collapsing over the face and obstructing the view.

THERMO hammocks – making sure you are lying the right way, as well as protecting you from the cold

With our THERMO hammocks , we have made use of this lying technique so that you can sleep comfortably in your hammock even in cooler temperatures. A compartment for an insulating mat has been sewn diagonally onto the underside of the THERMO hammock. This keeps the sleeping pad in the right position and prevents it from slipping while you sleep.

When hanging up your hammock, you should always pay attention to your safety. Here are some important tips for you, so that you can hang out in a relaxed way.
• Check your equipment! Before each hammock use, you should check your hammock, including accessories, for any holes, tears or damage.
• Pay attention to the maximum load capacity of your hammock and the suspension ropes . The weight increases, for example, if you want to enjoy the hammock as a twosome, or if it’s winter and you are wearing more clothes or put a heavy trekking rucksack in the hammock.
• The stability of the suspension points is essential for survival. The most common sources of danger are rotten tree branches, wobbly rocks or rusty posts. Before attaching your hammock, please make sure that the suspension point is firmly anchored and can hold your weight.
• Be aware of the danger from overhead! Falling coconuts on the beach or falling branches in the forest, as well as falling rocks beneath large cliffs, can lead to serious injuries.
• Only use heavy-duty ropes to fasten your hammock. Friction on sharp-edged rocks or particularly rough tree bark can cause ropes that are unduly thin to break.
• Always ensure a low drop height so that nothing happens to you in the event of a fall. Under no circumstances should you hang your hammock higher than 40-50 cm above the ground!
• Avoid sharp objects on your clothing or outdoor equipment, as well as pointed branches near the hammock. These can damage it and reduce the tensile strength of the material.
• Sparks from a campfire can also burn small holes in the hammock. Our ADVENTURE HAMMOCK is made out of 20D ripstop nylon. In spite of being so lightweight, this ultralight, breathable fabric is exceptionally robust and tear-resistant. For example, if a sharp object on your clothes makes a small hole in the hammock, it doesn’t turn into a ‘runner’ and will not tear. Now that you have your hammock securely fastened, all you need to know is how to lie in your hammock correctly!

For use on living trees, it is essential to use an additional tree strap.

• T-STRAP – the robust and exceedingly solid hammock strap

A popular hammock suspension system with tree protection is the T-STRAP. This consists of two wide, tree-protecting webbings, ultra-robust and adjustable with a speedy and infinitely variable metal buckle. With a load capacity of up to 200 kilos, these ropes are also ideal as a robust tensioning strap or as an extremely stable suspension system for attaching hammocks to trusses, steel beams, vehicle roof beams or angular timbers.
  • ADVENTURE ROPE – the ultralight hammock cable with integrated tree strap

If you favour the fast, ultra-light and convenient , our ADVENTURE ROPE is the right choice for you. The ropes, made of superlight and almost stretch-free Dyneema material, are adjusted with the help of a our ‘Woopy Sling’, and include an integrated tree guard . The connection to the hammock is achieved with a soft carabiner, which makes slipping out absolutely impossible. The total weight is an unbelievable 90 grams, and the ropes are so small that they fit into any trouser pocke t!

Hammock with integrated ropes – the cheap all-round solution

This ultra-light hammock comes with integrated suspension ropes. The TRAVEL SET is our simplest entry-level model and comes with two times 3 metres of rope and simple metal hooks. When attaching the hammock, the rope is wrapped around a tree one or more times and then hooked in.
